On Thursday, July 29, 2010, Arizona’s unprecedented immigration law goes into effect. Across the country, community organizations and individuals are preparing to protest this law, in hopes that it is not replicated in other states such as Utah. Plans are underway for a rally in Salt Lake City.
The ACLU of Utah will be sending a team of Legal Observers to this and future demonstrations. Are YOU willing to provide this critical community service as a trained Legal Observer?
If so, you are invited to attend the ACLU of Utah’s Legal Observer Training next week!
Where: ACLU of Utah office, 355 North 300 West, Salt Lake City
When: Wednesday, July 28, 6:30 to 8:30 PM
The training will be fast paced, relevant, and informative. It will include group discussions, role-playing scenarios, and video of other Legal Observers in action.
You do not need to volunteer as a Legal Observer on July 29, to take part in this training; we hope to call on our trained LOs for future events, as well!
Legal Observers are trained volunteers who act as official witnesses at demonstrations and events, documenting any incidents of police misconduct or violations of constitutional rights.
Legal Observers are committed to defending free speech as objectively as possible. They do not interfere with or stop law enforcement action. Legal Observers do not offer any legal advice to participants in rallies, protests, acts of civil disobedience, or other such events. They act as impartial witnesses only; they may take notes, photographs or make video recordings. The mere presence of such witnesses can deter civil liberties violations.
We hope you will join us in fulfilling this important task as a trained Legal Observer.
Please RSVP to Reinard Knutsen at aclu@aclutah.org, by Monday, July 26, 2010. We will have a participants packet prepared for you.
